Students, I've really been enjoying your presentations! But they go by so fast we don't have time to really enjoy them. To earn an extra five points, quickly describe your presentation and then give us a link to your ppt or Prezi. If you didn't make one, then you can make a list of your points and include a couple of pictures.
Thanks,

ReplyDeleteTelevision is becoming more and more important in our lives, just like another family “member” of ours. Most of the time as a consumer, commercials can have a heavy influence on our purchasing decisions. However, not all the commercials are selling good products. We must ask ourselves, is advertising good for public consumption? As long as commercials exists a constant threat to public consumption will also exist.
ReplyDeleteThe existence of advertising is inevitable, because advertising is good for companies. However, every coin has two sides, what is good for companies are not always good for consumers..
First of all, commercials only provide good information, because they want you to buy their product Obviously, presenting their product in a positive and bias way helps manufactures.
Secondly, big and powerful companies make most good commercials. This causes a problem because a product sells regardless of whether it is good or not; Success in this case in not always dependent on the quality but rather on the commercials.
Overall, I do not want to prohibit all commercials, and I am not hostile towards advertising. I simply wish to emphasize that companies will make decisions that are in their best interest. What is the relation between ad companies and manufactures? Commercials will convince consumers that a certain product is of good quality. I am not blaming anyone, but I am warning consumers. Many factors play a role in advertisement than simply the information being presented. That’s why ads not only tell us the information, but also allure our desire. That’s why we fall into excessive consumption. Advertising is bad for the public consumption and as consumers we must be aware of how commercials and advertisements affect us. We must all strive to be more informed and more intelligent consumers.
Shirts or skirts are greater than mashup.

Ducey Put Students Future at Risk!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.azcentral.com/videos/news/arizona/politics/2015/03/04/24379363/
This video shows Doug Ducey, our governor in Arizona, talking about his new budget. We can see in this video how proud he is over his proposal in the way he smiles when he talks about balancing the budget. Although, balancing the budget will have deep consequences for the education. We can hear in the video how the reporter is asking Ducey about this problem and how Ducey avoiding the question. He does not mention that this budget proposal will lead to an economic struggle for the schools, that also is going to hurt important departments, and when schools doesn’t have money and can’t provide a good education; it will affect the most important part in education. It will affect students; it will affect us. Doug Ducey’s budget proposal is definitely not balancing the budget in a good way, because he doesn’t prioritize education for students.
He has proposed huge fund cuts. Budget cut $104 million, ASU, NAU, UA
No state funds for three counties Maricopa, Pima and Pinal. They are left without any support.
This will have consequences for schools. Schools will lose important departments: nurses, counseling, and transportation (move non-classrooms funds to in-classroom funds to protect our programs.)
Non-classroom funds are very important -> Higher tuition -> fewer enrollments
Students will suffer most of all these cuts!
Unsafe environment -> cuts of important departments (e.g tutors, counseling etc.)
Too high tuition -> dept
This is important because we are the future and we are important, and we need our education.

ReplyDeleteTopic: "Excuse me- I'm Not From Arizona"
The video shows the importance of speaking proper English and the danger of language barriers -> being in hospital and not being able to express oneself-> risks one's life
English is the door to more integration:
- making friendships
- getting through college
- happiness
- feeling part of society
My topic is about the relationship between insulin resistance and obesity. It's been a while since we found the interactions between them. First, let's look at an animation.
ReplyDeleteInsulin resistance in diabetes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1vhMm0IBeA (Please ignore the title, we mainly focus on the relationship between insulin resistance and obesity. However, the concept of insulin resistance is pretty similar between them. So I present the animation to explain it)
Now here is the thing. The conventional wisdom is that obesity causes insulin resistance. Logically, if you want to treat insulin resistance, you have to lose weight. But what if we have it backwards? If obesity is not the cause of insulin resistance? Or if obesity is just a proxy of severe symptoms. It sounds wired and crazy, but let me give you two examples to illustrate my point.
Let's look at some suggestive facts. In U.S, about 30 million obese Americans that do not have insulin resistance, do not have a higher risk of getting severe diseases than lean people. Conversely, approximately 6 million lean people in U.S that have insulin resistance, do have a higher risk of getting severe diseases than obese counterparts. This fact contradicts our wisdom, which says obesity causes insulin resistance. In this case, insulin resistance might cause severe symptoms without getting obesity.
Another way to think of the relationship is to consider following analogy: Imagine you got bruise on your shin when you inadvertently bang your leg into the coffee or fell from the bicycle on the road. Of course, the bruise hurt your leg, and we don't like the discolored look. But we all know that the bruise Per Se is not the problem. In opposite, it is a health respond to the trauma. All of those immune cells rushing to the site of injury and salvage cellular debris and prevent the spread of infection throughout somewhere in the body. Imagine we thought the bruise were the problem. And we evolved a giant medical establishment and culture around treating bruise: Making cream, painkillers, etc. All of the while, ignoring the effect that people are still banging their legs into the coffee table, falling from the bicycles. How much better would it be if we treated the causes---Telling people to pay attention when walk along the living room or ride bikes gingerly on the road rather than the effect. Getting the cause and effects right makes the differences in the world. It's a subtle distinction, but the implications can be profound.
So what I am suggesting is that we cannot focus on how to treat insulin resistance(effect), we need to shift our attention to the obesity(cause) as well, because treating obesity is way better than treating the effect. That one we need to pay attention to.
